What is Character Counter?
The Character Counter is a free browser-based tool that counts characters, words, sentences, and lines in any text — and shows you exactly how your text fits within the character limits of major social media platforms. Different platforms have different limits: Twitter/X allows 280 characters per tweet, Instagram captions allow 2,200 characters, TikTok captions are limited to 150 characters, LinkedIn posts allow 3,000 characters, and YouTube titles should stay under 70 characters. MediaDrop's Character Counter shows all these limits simultaneously with a real-time colour indicator — green when you are within limits, amber when approaching the limit, and red when you have exceeded it.
How to use Character Counter
- Step 1: Type or paste your text into the large text area on the left.
- Step 2: The character count, word count, sentence count, and line count update instantly as you type.
- Step 3: Check the platform limit bars on the right to see how your text fits within each platform's limits.
- Step 4: Green means you are within the limit. Amber means you are approaching it. Red means you have exceeded it.
- Step 5: Edit your text until it fits within your target platform's limit.
- Step 6: Copy your finished text directly from the text area.
Tips for better results
- Watch the first line for Instagram. Instagram truncates captions after the first 125 characters in the feed. Your hook must be compelling in those first 125 characters to make people tap 'more'.
- Twitter/X is 280 characters per tweet. For thread writing, each tweet must stay under 280 characters. Use the character counter to draft each tweet separately before posting.
- TikTok captions should be under 150 characters. TikTok truncates captions in the feed. Keep your caption short enough that the key message is visible without tapping 'more'.
- YouTube titles should be under 60 characters. Although YouTube allows longer titles, titles over 60 characters get truncated in search results and suggested video panels. Aim for 50-60 characters for maximum visibility.
- Check word count for blog posts and articles. Use the word counter to track progress on longer content. A 500-word article, 1,000-word blog post, or 2,000-word guide all need different word counts.
- Use for ad copy and email subject lines. Google Ads headlines allow 30 characters. Email subject lines perform best at 40-50 characters. The counter helps you hit these targets precisely.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the character limit for Instagram captions?
Instagram captions allow up to 2,200 characters. However, only the first 125 characters appear in the feed before the 'more' button. Most creators aim for a compelling hook in the first 125 characters, then expand with more detail.
How many characters is a tweet on X (Twitter)?
Twitter/X allows 280 characters per tweet for standard accounts. Premium subscribers get access to longer posts. The 280-character limit applies to the main tweet text, excluding links which Twitter shortens to 23 characters.
What is the TikTok caption limit?
TikTok captions are limited to 150 characters. The visible text before truncation is approximately 100 characters. Keep your most important message within the first 100 characters.
Does the character counter include spaces?
Yes. The character counter counts every character including spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. This matches how social media platforms count characters in their limits.
Is the character counter free?
Yes. The Character Counter is completely free with no signup required. All counting happens in your browser — your text is never sent to any server.
