What is Engagement Rate, and How to Calculate It

Engagement rate (ER) measures how actively your audience interacts with your content. It is the gold standard for evaluating social media performance — far more meaningful than follower count alone. A small account with 5% ER is often more valuable to brands than a large account with 0.5% ER.

The formula we use

Engagement Rate = ((Likes + Comments) ÷ Followers) × 100. This is the most common ER formula, used by tools like Hootsuite, Sprout Social, and HypeAuditor. Some platforms include shares and saves — for those, calculate them separately and add to the numerator.

What is a good engagement rate?

  • Instagram: 1–3% is average, 3–6% is good, 6%+ is excellent.
  • TikTok: 5–9% is average — TikTok rates skew higher because of how the algorithm distributes views.
  • Facebook: 0.5–1% is average — organic reach has dropped significantly.
  • Twitter / X: 0.3–1% is average.
  • YouTube: 1–5% on community posts; for videos, watch time matters more than likes.

How to improve your engagement rate

  1. Post less, post better. Quality beats quantity. Cutting your posting frequency in half often raises ER.
  2. Ask questions. Direct prompts in captions drive comments more than statements.
  3. Reply to every comment. The algorithm rewards conversations.
  4. Post when your audience is active. Use a best-time-to-post tool to find your windows.
  5. Audit your followers. Bots and inactive followers tank your rate.

Common mistakes

Many creators inflate engagement by calculating it per-post and only sharing their best result. The honest method is to take your last 9–12 posts and average them — that is what brands actually do when evaluating you for a deal.
